Center for Communication

The bishops of Latin America and the Caribbean, inspired by the teachings of the universal Church and the recommendations of the five General Conferences of the Latin American Episcopate, have proposed the consolidation of an innovative ecosystem of communication and technology at the service of the Holy “People of God.”

Thus, the Center for Communication is born, which since 2019, with the process of renewal and restructuring, has sown the seeds for pastoral, synodal, and missionary communication in tune with the signs of the times.

The Center for Communication redefines and expands the scope and impact of the former Department of Communication and Press of Celam, also taking on the Celam Publishing.

Vision

The Center for Communication of CELAM will be a reference in communicative strategies at the service of the People of God, adapted and in line with current technologies. Its purpose is to promote the prophetic positioning of the Church and its impact on the transformation of reality. It also seeks to contribute to pastoral communication and the pastoral of communication in Latin America and the Caribbean in the key of synodality and from the perspective of the preferential option for the poor.

Mission

The Center for Communication of CELAM discerns, designs, executes, and evaluates communicative strategies at the service of the People of God that contribute to the mission of the Church in Latin America and the Caribbean through the consolidation of an innovative ecosystem of communication and technology, collaboration with ecclesial, social instances, and regional and international advocacy institutions, the promotion of CELAM's theological-pastoral services, in dialogue with the episcopal conferences and with the Dicastery for Communication of the Holy See.

Characteristics of its action

Communicate for the transformation of reality and Latin American and Caribbean impact. The communicative commitment of CELAM is called to accompany and echo its actions on the continent, under the inspiration of the Word of God and the thought of the Social Doctrine of the Church. For this, the inputs from the Observatory and the Knowledge Management Center are considered as such.

Communicate for the prophetic positioning of CELAM. The preferential option for the poor, present in the Magisterium of the Latin American and Caribbean Church and in its pastoral action, constitutes a fundamental guideline for the communication of CELAM. It is an expression of its prophetic, truthful, and hopeful vocation, endorsed by the testimony of the martyrs of yesterday and today who have given their lives for justice, equity, and peace.

Communicate for synodality and ecclesial articulation. The imperative of synodality in the Church must be translated into communicative options that add value to the processes of participation and ecclesial articulation. This dynamic seeks the protagonism of the People of God and the primacy of the culture of encounter.

Pastoral communication and the pastoral of communication. The recognition of communication as a place of evangelization. At the same time, it is worth noting that “evangelization, announcement of the Kingdom, is communication” (DP 1063). This constitutes a guideline for the communicative action of CELAM.

Communication at the service of the Latin American and Caribbean Church. The CELAM needs to strengthen its communicative and technological ecosystem at the service of the Latin American and Caribbean Church, as well as its strategies for promoting theological-pastoral training programs. It is even necessary to create its own news agency, strengthen communicative networks, and offer communicative support to the episcopal conferences.

Structure

To fulfill its mission, this Center has two areas: the Strategy area, responsible for defining the communication plan of CELAM, its policies and brand manual, promoting and establishing communication networks in service of the evangelizing mission on the continent, and strengthening the pastoral communication. On the other hand, there is the Media area, which implements what is defined by the strategy area. For this, it will be responsible for the relationship with the Media (press office), strengthening digital media (website, social networks among others), digital marketing, publishing, and production (video, translations, etc.).
